Cutthroat Anglers

Dave’s introduction to fly fishing came from his dad. At age 13, on a San Diego mountain lake that teaming with largemouth bass, bluegill and stocked trout, Dave learned from his father the basics of fly fishing that serve as Dave’s fly fishing foundation to this day. Growing up, Dave spent many a day in his swim trunks with a finger nail clipper in one pocket and a folding pocket knife in the other. Most summer evenings, Dave could be found standing waist deep in lily pads, learning to cast poppers with his trust fly “pole” (as he called it back then) purchased at the local 5 and dime store.

He moved to Frisco, Colorado in 1990 to start a security alarm business; a business that continues to thrive year after year. Shortly arriving in Frisco, Dave bought his second fly pole (yes, he was still calling them fly “poles”). He remembers it being a G-Loomis make of some unknown model--he really should have known not to call it a “pole.” Anyway, Dave bought a new reel, which wasn’t very memorable as it broke less than a week after he purchased it, and headed out to back pack the wilderness in search of trout in the high mountain lakes. After Dave tired of the long climbs, or as Dave got older, he turned his attention to the more easily accessible Blue and Colorado Rivers. It was during this period that Dave came to learn the ways of river trout.  Dave continues to focus his fishing attention on the Blue and the Colorado, but he can also be found plying his skills on the Eagle River, especially during the early months of our Rocky Mountain spring. Though he still likes G-Loomis products, Dave now leans on Sage and Scott to make his preferred rods. Yes, fear not, Dave has tossed his old fly “poles” aside in favor of today’s fly “rods.”

Recently, Dave took Cutthroat Anglers’ guide school where he learned to navigate our western rivers in a floating craft and where he polished his guiding skills to a fine point. And, as it turns out, guide school provided Dave with a bit of a realization: “I have a new found desire to help others gain knowledge and help them start fond memories of there own.” What more could you want from a guide…….well, maybe a few fish. Don’t worry, Dave knows how to catch them!

Oh, yeah, though he still likes G-Loomis products, Dave now leans on Sage and Scott to make his preferred rods. Yes, fear not, Dave has tossed his old fly “poles” aside in favor of today’s fly “rods.”
