Friday Flies with Jared Hawn
With summer fading and the transition into fall the hatches change. We are in the season of
smaller bugs and of course streamers. Tricos are starting to wane but we will see caddis,
midge and blue wing olives in abundance. Here are a few patters that are proven winners
for Fall fishing.
1. CDC HARES EAR SIZE 8 TO 18
This fly is one of my year round go to flies. Fall can produce a thick caddis hatch and this
staple should not be missed. Fish it under a dry dropper rig or nymph set up. In the Fall
I like the smaller sizes 16 and 18.
2. TUNGSTEN PSYCHO MAY SIZE 18 OR 20
A great little BWO nymph to be fished sub surface below a Hopper or straight nymph rig
3. ZEBRA MIDGE SIZE 16 TO 22
Very snazzy fly for mornings. We see these midges year round, but after most of the bigger
bugs have hatched the fish will key in on these little morsels. Try the black or olive.
4. BARLEY LEGAL STREAMER
This white and green streamer will provoke all sorts of fish! If you are looking to put a monster
in the basket this is my streamer of choice. When fishing this Bad Larry I use a sink tip line or
versa leader to get it down quick. Usually fishing out of a boat works best for streamers but
don't hesitate to bank fish with this fly.
