Ben's April Fishing and Guide Update

Spring fishing opportunities have arrived much quicker this year. Warmer temps have thawed our lakes, many creeks are fishable, and our river ramps are all accessible. On the flip side, we suffered a record-breaking low snowpack year, so our floatable fisheries have less water. Is run-off a thing this year? Probably not. Anglers doing it themselves and those thinking about guide trips should move their fishing calendars up and get going now!
The positive news is the fishing has been fantastic, and we are excited for April. Our wade fishing options are producing great days and that should only continue. We are enjoying excellent days on the upper Colorado, Eagle, Arkansas and Blue River. Floatable options like the Roaring Fork and Lower Colorado are great as well. Whether you are floating on your own or doing a guide trip, consider staying in Glenwood Springs overnight to ease driving stress. The town vibe is great with plentiful food, drink and lodging options. Lastly, consider a lake charter this April. Opportunities at larger fish are frequent and lakes will be a good option for every angler during a low water year.

In terms of bug life, we are seeing consistent hatches of BWO's and Caddis on most of our freestone rivers like the Roaring Fork, Colorado and Arkansas River. Cloudy, windless days should provide great dry fly opportunities mid-day to later afternoon. Most of our tailwater options are seeing lower than usual flows and that will most likely be the norm for the majority of the season due to low snowpack. Sight-fishing opportunities will be plentiful on these dam release rivers like the Blue, and Williams Fork. P.S -- They stocked the Blue in Silverthorne with 14-18 inch Snake River Cutthroat Trout.
