Fly Tying Classes 2025/2026

TYING CLASSES FOR THE WINTER OF 2025/2026 WILL BE ANNOUNCED SOON!

Want to dial in your fly tying skills? Our fly tying class series will kick off with an intro to fly tying class, and each proceeding session will reinforce techniques previously learned, and introduce brand new skills.  There will be well suited options for both beginner, and seasoned tyers at each session.

We have 4 spots available for each class so everyone gets the attention they need.

Classes will by taught by Cutthroat Anglers resident artist, and fly tying enthusiast Jacob Lutz.  They will take place at our very own family friendly bar "The Fish Tank" (All Ages welcome) (Drinks will be available for purchase)

All materials required for classes will be provided.  Vises and tools provided as needed. 

All students will receive 15% OFF any additional tying materials they desire! 

 

Session 1: Intro to Tying

1. Basic skills workshop

  • Tying in material onto a hook 
  • Wrapping/Palmering Material 
  • Whip Finish/Half Hitch Knot 
  • Learning Basic Fly Tying Materials 
  • Hook Selection/Thread Selection/Tying Tool Basics 
  • FINAL EXAM: Tie a Wooly Bugger 

 

Session 2: Tying Nymphs (Subsurface Flies) 

1. Basic: Tying simple nymphs 

  • Learn how to tie Zebra Midge or Frenchie 

2. Advanced: Jig/Euro Nymphs

  • Working with UV Resin
  • Jig Hook and Bead Selection 
  • Working with Quill Body 

 

Session 3: Tying Dry Flies  

1. Basic: 

  • Learn how to tie Elk Hair Caddis and/or Parachute Adams

2. Advanced: 

  • Tying Hoppers/Creating foam extended Bodies

 

Session 4: Learn How to Tie Leech Patterns 

1. Basic: 

  • Learn how to tie a Pine Squirrel Leech 

2. Advanced: 

  • Learn how to tie a Balanced Leech 

 

Session 5: Learn How to Tie Streamers 

1. Basic: 

  • Creating streamer heads with dubbing and weighted eyes 

2. Advanced: 

  • How to Articulate streamers using wire tippet
  • Using dubbing loops
  • Creating streamer heads with dubbing and weighted eyes 

 

Session 6: Open Workshop 

  • Open tying session
  • Instructional Requests 
  • A free AJ's beer included
